If you are not a hard-core zombie movie lover, this movie might not be for you.
If you are a hard-core zombie movie lover than you will find this one fun. First of all, there is something visceral about the idea ghost towns. Ghost towns (where everybody leaves and leaves their toys and stuff around) are creepy. When you add to that the fear and haunting of a town deserted due to nuclear radiation disaster; well, it is super creepy because nuclear disasters are absolutely terrifying. I am still thinking about Fukushima and the lack of data that we have about the long-term implications of it.
The screenplay for the Chernobyl Diaries was co-written by Orin Peli, Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke. Orin Peli is the creator of the wonderful Paranormal Activity movies, so he is no stranger to delivering on nail-biting suspense. There is plenty of gore and scary dogs and evil “goodness knows whats” in the water. There is the typical people getting knocked off in succession. The zombies are less available for viewing than in most other zombie movies, which I think makes them scarier. Even though I did not find the ending terrible satisfying, it was not that bad either. Throughout the movie, I enjoyed going along for the ride and if you love zombie movies, you will too!
